Safe Environment Requirements for Employees
and Volunteers

Thank you for offering to assist in our programs for children. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia requires all adults who have contact with children to obtain several Safe Environment clearances. This applies to clergy, employees and volunteers for activities including reading circle, lunch duty, PREP, CYO coaching, etc.

You will find details and links for completing the clearances in the box to the right. If you volunteer less than once a week, you need numbers 1-4. If you volunteer once a week or more, you need all six. All clearances must be obtained before working with children.

Minor under the age of 18 who volunteer are not required to obtain background checks.

Employees, you need all six requirements . You must complete the fingerprinting process vs. the disclosure (#3) even if you have lived in Pennsylvania for more than 10 years.

Follow These Steps:

  • 1. Criminal Record Check

  • 2. Child Abuse Clearance

  • 3. Federal Criminal History Background Check
    Valid for five years

    • FBI History Clearance
      (fingerprinting)
All employees must complete this process and also any volunteer who has been a PA resident for less than 10 years. The Service Code for volunteers is 1KG6ZJ; the employee code is 1KG6TR.

    OR

    • Disclosure Form
To be signed by a volunteer who has been a PA resident for the entire last 10 years and has not committed designated crimes in Pennsylvania or elsewhere. This option is only available to volunteers.
  • 4. Mandated Reporter Acknowledgement Form

Anyone, paid or unpaid, who has direct responsibility for a child is a mandated reporter. This includes any volunteer who has direct contact with children while volunteering in schools, parishes, athletics, as well as groups or organizations such as the Boy/Girl Scouts.
