The Eucharist – A Sacred Action Surpassing All Others

“In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”  With these words, the priest who presides at the Celebration of the Eucharist draws the congregation into the sacred moment of worship.  We believe in God who is both one and yet a communion of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Made in the image and likeness of God, who is one God in three Persons, we are called to worship not only alone but also as a community.  When I explain the Mass to children, […]

THE EUCHARIST: SOURCE AND SUMMIT OF OUR FAITH

Every time we gather around our Lord’s Table in the celebration of the Eucharist, we recall our Lord’s saving words and actions and receive his life-giving Body and Blood.  The Code of Canon Law directs the pastor “to see to it that the Most Holy Eucharist is the center of the parish assembly of the faithful; he is to work to see to it that the Christian faithful are nourished through a devout celebration of the sacraments and especially that they frequently approach the sacrament of the Most Holy Eucharist” […]

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

I want to start off by commending you for coming to Mass this morning.  It’s a miserable day, hot, humid, muggy, rainy, a good day to just stay home and read a good book, watch television or troll the internet for a sale; not a good day to go anywhere – but you’re here; good for you.  So, why did you come here this morning?  It’s because you’re the seed that’s fallen on rich soil.  You have heard God’s word and understood that it is important to you.  You recognize […]

Eleven Archdiocesan Priests serve as Missionaries of Mercy for the Church of Philadelphia

Today, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia announced that Pope Francis has appointed 10 new Missionaries of Mercy for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.  In total, the Holy Father has commissioned 11 missionaries for our local Church as a visible expression of the mercy of God, which is at the heart of the priesthood and all of Catholic life.

Reverend Monsignor George A. Majoros, Pastor of the partnering parishes of Sacred Heart Church in Clifton Heights and Saint Charles […]

ARCHDIOCESE OF ONITSHA

ANNUAL MISSIONARY COOPERATIVE

Last week, we announced that Fr. Celestine Madubuko, representing the Archdiocese of Onitsha, would come this weekend for the annual Missionary Cooperative Appeal.  This is one of the two times throughout the year (the other is World Mission Sunday in October) that we focus on the universal Church and our union with fellow Catholics around the world.  We hear Jesus invite us in today’s gospel passage “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon […]

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

It is every parent’s dream.  It goes like this.  Your child is a guest at someone’s home for dinner; maybe it’s a friend or a relative.  When the meal is over, your child is the one who, without being asked, rises from the table, grabs some plates, takes them into the kitchen and puts them either in the sink or in the dishwasher.  What parent doesn’t live with the secret hope that your ten thousand nudges to your kids “pick that up” and “put that in the trash” and “did […]
