You know that line of children you see leaving Mass before the scripture readings? They’re heading over to the parish center for Children’s Liturgy of the Word. Held every Sunday at the 9:30 Mass, Children’s Liturgy helps kids understand the day’s readings and connect the lessons to their own lives. While their parents listen to the word of God in church (child-free!), the liturgy leaders present the same scripture in simple language and use singing, crafts and other activities to engage the little ones. They often return to the pews with handouts which can spur continued faith conversation at home.
Attendance at Children’s Liturgy of the Word has doubled in the past 10 years; typically, 30-40 children now join each week but sometimes there are more 60!  While more families are coming to Mass, the increase can also be attributed to the dedicated leaders who prepare engaging and creative lessons. In the past few years, more adults have volunteered which has allowed the ministry to expand to include pre-k children and offer more learning opportunities. St. Katharine’s is blessed to have adults willing to dedicate their talents to ministries for worshippers of all ages.
Over two years ago, the Pastoral Plan committees began efforts to make SKS a stronger community of faith. The growth of Children’s Liturgy of the Word, a place where children develop their faith, enjoy time with friends and form their own church community, highlights the goals of all three committees: Liturgy Experience, Faith Sharing and Parishioner Engagement.
