SKS Plans to Reopen June 6

I’m sure you have all heard the wonderful news!  Archbishop Pérez has announced that parishes of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will be able to resume public Masses next weekend – that is 6 – 7 June – if the state government moves our region into the Yellow Phase, as is expected, on 5 June.  I look forward to welcoming you back! In the midst of the wind and waves of this coronavirus pandemic, let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus as we make our way back to celebration of […]

STATEMENT FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE REGARDING THE PROJECTED RESUMPTION OF THE PUBLIC CELEBRATION OF MASS IN THE FIVE-COUNTY REGION

22 May 2020 Update:

In mid-March, the celebration of public Mass was suspended in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the obligation for the faithful to attend Mass was dispensed. Those decisions were not made lightly and were always intended to be temporary measures.

They were made out of necessity for the common good and in recognition of the fact that all of us share a responsibility for the preservation of public health, especially in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.  During this unprecedented time, the Archdiocese has made every effort to provide […]

SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER (Year A)

John 17:1 – 11a

Welcome to my annotated commentary on Sunday’s readings.  The purpose of my commentary is to give you the background for each reading, a little better understanding of its message and the message that all of the Sunday readings together provide us.

This Sunday, we hear a continuation from last week of Jesus’ address to the apostles as presented in John’s Gospel.  As you will see in your footnotes, most scholars consider the section of 13:31 – 17:26 to be Johannine compositions, modeled on farewell discoursed found in contemporary […]

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you mothers!  This will be a most unusual Mother’s Day but please know that you will all be in my special prayers!

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER (Year A)

John 10:1 – 10

Welcome to my annotated commentary of Sunday’s readings.  The purpose of my commentary is to give you the background for each reading, a little better understanding of its message and the message that all of the Sunday readings provide us.

As I mentioned last week, most of the Sunday Gospels during Easter this year will be from the Gospel of John.  We heard from the Gospel of Luke last week but we return to John’s Gospel.  This Sunday, we hear a presentation of the Lord’s attack against the […]

Happy Feastday Saint Catherine of Siena

As we celebrate the Feast of our patron saint, Catherine of Siena, let me invite you to watch an excellent YouTube presentation by the then Fr. Robert Barron on St. Catherine.  As always with Bishop Barron, it’s an excellent presentation, giving us really good insights into her life and influence in the world of her day and even today; you will find a link to his presentation below. And, if you didn’t join in the live streamed school Mass earlier this morning, you will find a link to that […]

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER (Year A)

Luke 24:13 – 35

Welcome to my annotated commentary of Sunday’s readings.  The purpose of my commentary is to give you the background for each reading, a little better understanding of its message and the message that all of the Sunday readings provide us.

Although this is the year when our Sunday Masses will ordinarily feature the Gospel of Matthew, we hear almost exclusively from a John’s Gospel throughout the Easter Season, since this Gospel contains the most material on the Resurrection of our Lord.  However, on the Third Sunday of […]
