Second Window: From Noah to Moses

The baptismal font, hand and paschal candle in the lower section of the Noah panel recall the first letter of St. Peter where it is written that “this [ark] prefigured baptism, which saves you now” (1 Pet 3:21).  The paschal candle is a reminder of the reception of the sacrament of Baptism and is always lit when Baptism is celebrated.  Octagonal baptismal fonts were quite common in the early Church.  They represent the seven days of creation followed by the eighth day, the […]

First Window: God and Creation

In the first panel, God, represented by the all-seeing eye, contemplates the creation of the world. Wisdom is represented by two female figures, one asleep in the womb of eternity and the other playing before God. This imagery is found in the Book of Sirach 1:4: “Before anything was created there was wisdom; prudent understanding from eternity.”  Throughout the Old Testament, Wisdom is usually personified as a woman.

The fountains in this panel refer to the Book of Proverbs 8:24 where Wisdom is said […]

What is the Eucharist?

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and giving it to his disciples said, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying “Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins.” Matthew 26:26-28
When was the last time you thought about the divinity of the Eucharist? Too often, we go through the motions of receiving the sacrament, […]

Eucharistic Revival Overview

Catholics need a reminder about the true meaning of the Eucharist. So concluded the US Conference of Catholic Bishops following a recent study that found that only 31% of U.S. Catholics believe that bread and wine truly become the Body and Blood of Jesus during Mass; most think they only symbolize Christ. The National Eucharistic Revival, a three-year initiative, was created by the bishops to restore understanding and devotion to this mystery and remind us of Jesus’ Real Presence in the Eucharist.
  • Year one was committed to revival on the diocesan […]

PENTECOST SUNDAY (Year A)

On Pentecost Sunday, you will see that different readings are prescribed for the Vigil Mass than for the Mass on Sunday.  I will reflect on the readings for the Sunday Masses, so don’t be surprised if you attend the Vigil Mass and hear different readings.

John 20:19-23

If this reading sounds familiar to you, it is because you heard it just a few weeks ago.  On the Second Sunday of Easter, the Gospel reading is the same in all three years of the Liturgical Cycle – John 20:19 – 31.  On that […]

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER (Year A)

John 14:15 – 21

This Sunday, we hear a continuation from last week of Jesus’ address to the apostles at the Last Supper as presented in John’s Gospel.  As you will remember from your footnotes, most scholars consider the section of 13:31 – 17:26 to be Johannine compositions, modeled on farewell discourses found in Greek and Hebrew literature of that time. As we quickly approach Pentecost – it’s only two weeks away – we hear Jesus speak of the coming of the Holy Spirit.  I invite you to put yourselves in […]

Parishioner Engagement:  Using Parish Coffees to Grow

Lately, the Parishioner Engagement committee has been eyeing coffees as a way to grow parish ministries. The committee has identified three components of a successful parish coffee: food and beverages, a committed ministry host and a service activity for the children. Each ministry receives a new tip sheet, created by the parishioner engagement team, on “How to Host a Successful Parish Coffee” with suggestions for soliciting food, finding volunteers, quick set-up, clean-up, etc. The sheet also emphasizes ways the ministry can use the coffee to promote itself, its mission, activities and […]

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER (Year A)

John 14:1 – 12

This Sunday, we hear a portion of Jesus’ address to the apostles during the Last Supper as presented in John’s Gospel.  In this Gospel, it is presented as our Lord’s farewell discourse to his disciples in anticipation of his death.  Most scripture scholars consider this section (chapters 14 – 18) to be a Johannine composition, modeled on farewell discourses found in contemporary Greek and Hebrew literature.  You will notice that the only action in John’s account of the Last Supper is the washing of the feet and […]

Fall 2023 Tackle Football

Dear St. Katharine’s CYO Community,

As the school year draws to a close, we would like to update you on the potential for Fall 2023 Tackle Football at St. Katharine’s for grades 5-8.

The St. Katharine’s CYO Board has been diligently exploring options to offer our student-athletes the opportunity to participate in tackle football under the CYO umbrella. As many of you are aware, Trinity football unfortunately concluded last year, leaving our students without a football option through our parish and school. In response, we have been investigating various alternatives and are currently working on a potential partnership […]
