ANNUAL VISIT TO ST. MARTIN DE PORRES PARISH

Next Sunday, you are invited to join in the celebration of the Sunday Mass at our sister parish, St. Martin de Porres.  It is always a pleasure to join in their lively celebration and I invite you to join us there!  For those of you who are not familiar with St. Martin de Porres parish and our relationship with it, allow me to give you a little history.  Our relationship with this parish began in 1991 in response to a call from Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua (who was then the Ordinary […]

TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

For the ancient Jew, wealth and possessions were seen as signs of God’s favor. So you can imagine why we hear about the disciples being so shocked in today’s Gospel when Jesus says: “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!”  How could the people God favors have a hard time entering his kingdom? If that is true, the disciples wonder, “who can be saved?”

Jesus’ reply holds the key: with God all things are possible. Wealth, power, and merit tend to give us […]

STEWARDSHIP WEEKEND

“My God will fully supply whatever you need.  …To our God and Father, glory forever and ever. Amen.” (Philippians. 4: 19-20).  In today’s second reading, we hear a passage from St. Paul’s letter to the first European Christian community, located in Philippi, Greece.  He is thanking them for providing him with much-needed financial assistance as he continued his missionary journey through northern Europe.  As you know, the Church spread throughout the region as a result of his tireless efforts of proclaiming the gospel to people who needed to hear it.  […]

TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

As I’m sure you realize, we usually have a missionary assigned to our parish to promote the missions for Mission Sunday.  The archdiocesan Mission Office had assigned us a priest several months ago.  Earlier this week, however, we learned from his religious community that he would not be available.  I called the Mission Office immediately to see if another missionary could come.  Michelle, the office’s assistant director, explained that, unfortunately, there was an increasing shortage of missionaries and none was available this weekend.  “Of course, Msgr. Brouwers,” she continued, “we […]

ANNUAL EUCHARISTIC DEVOTION/WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

ANNUAL EUCHARISTIC DEVOTION

As you know, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) initiated a three-year Eucharistic Revival in June 2022 to provide us all with a renewed encounter with Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.  This, the last year of our revival, is called the Year of Mission and we are all called to engage in the universal mission of the Church by sharing our faith with someone.  We are strengthened in our faith every time we receive the Eucharist or spend time before the Blessed Sacrament in […]

TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

“Would that the Lord might bestow his spirit on them all!”  In our first reading today, we heard Joshua, Moses’ aide who would eventually succeed him, protest to Moses that Eldad and Medad were not present when the Spirit of God came and rested upon the rest of the elders, so they should not be prophesying.  Pay attention to Moses’ response: “Would that all the people of the LORD were prophets!  Would that the Lord might bestow his spirit on them all!”

And, in our Gospel, we heard John, the beloved […]

RESPECT LIFE MONTH

It may be hard to believe, but October begins this week!  Every October, the Catholic Church in the United States celebrates Respect Life Month and we are called to consider more deeply why every human life is valuable and reflect on how to build a culture that protects life from conception to natural death.  With such issues as abortion, in vitro fertilization and immigration among the most important and controversial topics being debated in preparation for the upcoming elections, this is certainly a providential moment for us to reflect on […]
